Holy Angels
ActiveNunda, Livingston County
Holy Angels Church was established in 1854 in Nunda, a village nestled in the scenic Genesee Valley of Livingston County. The parish was founded to serve the Catholic families scattered across this rural farming region, providing a spiritual home in what was then frontier territory.
The parish has been served by many pastors over its 170-year history, reflecting the challenges of staffing rural parishes far from Rochester. Father J. Norman Margrett provided stability during his 13-year tenure from 1944 to 1957. Father Joseph Sasso served the longest pastorate in recent memory, shepherding the parish for 16 years from 1978 to 1994.
Holy Angels has adapted to the realities of serving a small rural community. In recent years, lay administrators including Michael Sauter have provided leadership, continuing the parish's ministry to the Nunda community.
Today, Holy Angels is part of St. Luke the Evangelist Parish, which serves Catholics across Livingston County. The parish continues its mission of bringing the Catholic faith to the beautiful Genesee Valley, carrying forward a tradition that began when the first settlers arrived in this region.
