City of Rochester, Monroe County

Holy Apostles Parish was established on May 1, 1884, with Father Timothy C. Murphy serving as its first pastor. The present church, known for its distinctive medieval castle-like architecture, was built and dedicated on March 20, 1897.

The parish and its school played an important role in the local Catholic community along Lyell Avenue. Holy Apostles School served as the nearest non-German speaking parochial school in the area, with families willing to have their children walk considerable distances to receive instruction in English rather than attend the closer German-language schools.

Today, Holy Apostles continues to serve the northwest Rochester community as part of the Diocese of Rochester.
