Our Lady of Sorrows
DemolishedCity of Rochester, Monroe County
In 1924, Our Lady of Sorrows was founded as an Italian mission church to accommodate overflow from the nearby Italian parish of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, which had recently been established. A former German Baptist mission at 10 Dake St., situated at the corner of Dake and Niagara, was acquired for the new community. The building received its dedication on Sep. 22, 1929. Our Lady of Sorrows held its last Mass in 1938, with many parishioners subsequently joining St. Francis Xavier church. In 1939, the former church and rectory became the Genesee Settlement House under Fr. Joseph Vogt's leadership. The structure stood at least into the late 1960s before being demolished. The lot remains vacant today.
