St. Anne
ActiveCity of Rochester, Monroe County
St. Anne Church was formally established on February 9, 1930, the same year the University of Rochester opened its River Campus nearby. The parish was founded to serve Catholic families in the Upper Mount Hope neighborhood, near what would become Strong Memorial Hospital and the Al Sigl Center. The first parish building was constructed at the corner of Mount Hope Avenue and Brighton Park.
The original building was destroyed by fire in 1944, but the resilient parish community rebuilt. The present church building, a significant upgrade from the earlier structures, was dedicated on May 19, 1959. The parish has been characterized by pastoral stability, with Monsignor George J. Schmitt leading the community for its first two decades from 1930 to 1950, followed by Monsignor William J. Naughton from 1950 to 1973.
Today, St. Anne is clustered with Our Lady of Lourdes in Brighton, and the two parishes share ministry and resources while serving their distinct neighborhoods. The church's location on Mount Hope Avenue (Route 15) places it at the heart of a vibrant area near the University of Rochester and the region's major medical facilities, continuing to serve students, medical professionals, and longtime neighborhood families alike.
