St. Ann
ActiveCity of Hornell, Steuben County
The roots of St. Ann's Church trace back to 1843, when Father Benedict Bayer organized the parish and celebrated the first Mass in a private home near Webb's Crossing—the house of Thomas Doorley. The parish was officially established in 1849, and its first church building was dedicated on April 11, 1869.
Father Michael Creedon founded St. Ann School in 1863, marking the beginning of Catholic education in Hornell. The school moved into a new building in 1890 that could accommodate up to 300 students, with a new wing added in 1962 to meet growing enrollment.
The current church, a striking French Gothic Revival structure, was completed in 1889 and stands today as a testament to the community's enduring faith. St. Ann's Federation Building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing the parish's architectural and historical significance.
For over 175 years, St. Ann's has been a pillar of faith and community in Hornell. Today, the parish is part of Our Lady of the Valley, continuing to serve Catholics throughout the Hornell area and southern Steuben County.
