St. Francis Church in Phelps was established as a mission in 1862 and became a parish on March 25, 1869. Father Edward J. Simpson served for an extraordinary 48 years from 1919 until his retirement in 1967—one of the longest pastorates in the diocese. The present church building was dedicated on October 4, 1931, the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. Today, St. Francis is part of St. Peter Parish.
