St. Mary
ActiveCity of Corning, Steuben County
St. Mary Church is Corning's inaugural Catholic parish, originally established as a mission called "Our Lady Help of Christians" in February 1848. For years, Catholics from across Steuben County traveled to this church for Mass, making it a regional center of Catholic worship.
Ground was broken on the present stone church in 1866, with Buffalo Bishop John Timon laying the cornerstone on June 10 of that year. The impressive structure was completed and dedicated on July 12, 1870, and has proudly endured as a focal worship point for area Catholics for over 150 years.
Over the years, three more parishes developed in the Corning area: St. Patrick's, St. Vincent's, and Immaculate Heart of Mary in Painted Post. In 2001, these churches merged into a single All Saints Parish with four worship sites and St. Mary as the main church. Due to the decreasing availability of priests and the cost of maintaining four separate campuses, St. Mary is now the only site from that original quartet still in operation, continuing to serve as the cornerstone of Catholic life in Steuben County.
