Honeoye Falls - St. Paul of the Cross
ActiveMendon (Honeoye Falls), Monroe County
St. Paul of the Cross Church in Honeoye Falls was established as a mission in 1846, when Father William A. Gregg of nearby St. Rose Church began serving the small Catholic community in this southern Monroe County village. For over two decades, the mission was served by priests from St. Rose before achieving full parish status on May 30, 1869, with Father Charles B. Rimmels as the first resident pastor.
The most remarkable chapter in the parish's history was the pastorate of Father Martin J. Cluney, who served for an extraordinary 46 years from 1890 until his death in 1936. Father Cluney guided the parish through a period of tremendous change—from the horse-and-buggy era through World War I and into the automobile age. The present church building was constructed in 1940, just a few years after his passing.
Father Otto J. Vogt provided another era of long service, leading the parish for 20 years from 1975 to 1995. Father Lawrence A. Gross continued this tradition with a 15-year pastorate from 1995 to 2010.
Today, St. Paul of the Cross is part of the St. Agnes/St. Paul of the Cross/St. Rose cluster, reuniting the parish with St. Rose—the church that served as its mother parish nearly 180 years ago.
