Cayuga Jesuit Mission
MissionUnion Springs, Cayuga County
Standing on the east side of Rt. 90, just north of Great Gully Brook, this mission cross marks a former Jesuit mission at the Goiogouen village — thought to be where the first Christian church in all of Western New York was built. Fathers Joseph Chaumonot and Rene Menard dedicated the chapel of St. Joseph at this location on September 6, 1656. A second chapel bearing the same name was completed on November 9, 1668.
