Church of the Assumption
ActivePerinton (Bushnell's Basin, Fairport), Monroe County
The Church of the Assumption began as a mission of Palmyra's St. Anne Church in 1854, serving the Catholic community in the Fairport and Bushnell's Basin area. The first church was built at 22 High Street in 1854 and was later expanded to twice its original size. That original church building still stands today, across the street from the current worship site.
The community became a parish in its own right in 1866, with Father Louis J. Miller serving as its first resident pastor. During the pastorate of Father John Codyre in 1882, a new and larger church bearing the name Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was constructed on land that now serves as the parking lot for the current church.
The present worship site on East Avenue was built in 1981 and dedicated on May 15, 1983. Today, the Church of the Assumption continues to serve the Fairport community, sharing a pastor with the nearby Church of the Resurrection.
